England started their path to the 2022 World Cup with the easiest of wins against the lowest-ranked national team on the planet in an empty stadium.
The 2018 semi-finalists took a 5-0 victory over a San Marino side struggling to get the ball into their penalty area, raising new questions that the European minnows were among the main groups qualifying.
“If I’m super critical we probably should have scored more,” England manager Gareth Southgate said.
Real challenges will come later for Southgate in Group I, as evidenced in Budapest where Poland came back from behind to draw 3-3 against Hungary with Robert Lewandowski completing the return.
Southgate was able to give its captain the night off as Harry Kane remained on the bench throughout, filling the role of England fan in an empty Wembley.
This allowed Ollie Watkins to score on his inside-post debut in the 83rd minute to complete a rout that began with James Ward-Prowse sweeping his first England goal in his fifth appearance in the 21st. Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s brace – a first-half header and a close-range finish after the break – scored the striker’s first competitive goals for his country and Raheem Sterling took his Three Lions tally to 14 with a deflected finish at the post at the 31st. minute
“All day at the hotel I was just thinking, ‘I hope I have a chance and just take this and have this opportunity to potentially score,’ but I had no idea that was going to happen,” said Watkins, who has climbed to play in the semi-professional Premier League leagues with Aston Villa. “It was a good trip. I’m just honored to be able to come here.
San Marino, ranked 210th, didn’t give Nick Pope a single save to make in England’s goal. But there has been a series of impressive saves from goalkeeper Elia Benedettini, who plays third tier in Italy – the country surrounding the city-state.
San Marino have now conceded 42 goals in seven defeats against England, but managed to find the net once against the Three Lions in 1993.
“In some situations we haven’t tried to make life difficult for England,” San Marino coach Franco Varrella said through a translator.
Former England striker Gary Lineker noted in Thursday’s game that San Marino was ‘absurd’ and that other small teams did not need to go through a pre-qualifying campaign to earn the right to play. largest nations like England, ranked fourth.
“It’s not the level of play that will dictate our performance this summer,” Southgate said ahead of the rescheduled European Championship which ends at Wembley in July. “But you have respect for the game in front of you and you approach it in the right way.”
England also have a group game against Andorra, the small nation ranked 138th by FIFA which lost 1-0 to Albania on Thursday. But first, England are heading to Tirana for their next game on Sunday as part of that triple-header before welcoming Poland to Wembley next Wednesday as they chase the lone automatic qualifying spot.
