Albanian police arrest 28 people in international anti-Mafia operation – Released
Albanian police arrested 28 people suspected of drug trafficking, money laundering and corruption, including current and former officials, in a joint international operation with Italian authorities. 10 other people were arrested in Italy, Montenegro and Spain as part of the joint operation coordinated by Eurojust, tEU Agency for Cooperation in Criminal Justice Matters.
The prosecutor of Vlora Maksim Sota and two former security agents of the former interior minister Saimir Tahiri are among those arrested, the special prosecutor’s office against organized crime (SPAK) ad Friday.
The charges against the two former police officers relate to crimes committed in 2016, at a time when cannabis cultivation was widespread in Albania.
The then minister, Saimir Tahiri, is also under investigation for drug trafficking, but a lower court has exonerated him. His case is awaiting retrial after a decision by an appeal court.
SPAK said the investigation has been ongoing for several years, resulting in the seizure of 6 tons of drugs, representing a market value of 55 million euros. Also, 12 real estate units, 4 companies and several cars should be seized.
