TEMPO.CO, Valletta – The Maltese public sector has been certified first in Europe in terms of e-government services, the Maltese government has announced.

In a statement released by the Principal Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office on Friday July 29, it emerged that Malta had achieved top spot in the ‘eGovernment Benchmark Reports 2022’ published by the European Commission.

The report analyzes online government services in 35 European countries.

Malta obtained an average score of 96%, followed by Estonia (90%) and Luxembourg (87%).

The Maltese public sector, made up of government ministries and departments, ranked first after coming first in all the criteria for this exercise, according to the statement. Malta’s score was 28% above the average.

The head of the Maltese civil service, Tony Sultana, said that this result certifies the high level of public services rendered in Malta.

He added that such a result would not have been possible without the dedication of public officials, and the investments made and still to be made so that the Public Service remains at the forefront, with the best digital tools and talents to handy.

The European Union (EU) undertakes the benchmark annually to determine how effectively public administrations deliver their services using modern digital tools and channels. The exercise assesses the supply and delivery of e-government services in 35 countries across Europe. These are the 27 EU Member States plus Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Turkey.
