The best European destinations for dining out might not be the ones that come to mind first, at least if you’re after vegetarian cuisine. If you’re a vegetarian, you might want to plan a visit to Belgrade, Serbia, where animal-free food options take the top spot. And this is not the only surprise found in this British study which aimed to identify the best places for different types of catering on the Old Continent.

London, Paris and Copenhagen have particular strengths
London is known for its iconic cocktail bars. Paris for its delicious gourmet restaurants. Copenhagen for its avant-garde food scene. If you thought you knew the culinary specialties of each European destination, your preconceptions could be called into question by this Uswitch study which counts the number of restaurants, bars, cafes or pubs in 1,356 European cities. To create the analysis, 236,854 restaurants with at least four or more stars on Tripadvisor were reviewed and the price range of each was explored. All this to compile a list of European destinations where you can eat well for a reasonable price.

Belgrade and Serbia are great for vegetarians
Defying expectations, in the âvegetarianâ category, Belgrade, Serbia came out on top, just a hair ahead of Valletta, the capital of Malta. In a different category, the study called Skopje in North Macedonia as the fast food capital of Europe. Casual fast food outlets seem especially delicious in the largest Macedonian city, with the score reaching 9.14 out of 10. Skopje is also the cheapest city for dining out, averaging $ 16.30. or about 14 euros.

And if brunch is your thing, extend your visit to the Balkans, as Tirana, Albania tops the list of European destinations with the best brunch deals.
The study completed its comparison by aggregating all the data to identify the best places to eat. Athens, Greece, came first with a score of 88.47 out of 100, boosted by its dense network of cafes. As for Rome, London, Paris and Stockholm, these capitals, often acclaimed for the quality of their cuisine, only arrive in 19th, 23rd, 24th and 30th respectively.
